Our story

Dealing with the challenges of today requires problem-solvers who bring different perspectives and are willing to take risks. Camp Willow was founded by Sydney Watson who wanted to combine all of her expertise and passions in the entertainment business, psychology, mental health, and love for the outdoors and animals to give children with special needs a safe space to explore new possibilities. Sydney obtains licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider Designation. Sydney holds degrees in Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialty in play therapy and expressive arts. Sydney also is a Certified Anxiety Informed Professional and has special training in treating trauma. She possesses experience working in the field as a mental health clinician in Tennessee, where she individually counsels clients of all ages and diagnoses. She has experience as a behavior therapist for children with autism and has volunteered her time at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles by delivering reading and play therapy, along with nutrition awareness. She has also selflessly devoted herself to working with adults recovering from severe mental illness at a psychiatric rehabilitation home. Sydney's passion for the arts has always played a large part in her life, including her studying theatre and dance in college and then acting on stage and in television/film both in Chicago and Los Angeles. 

Camp Willow emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community's children and families and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. The willow tree holds a lot of symbolism. From bending without breaking, being flexible and expressive, adjusting with life, and adapting in challenging conditions. The willow tree exemplifies stability, structure, support, balance, learning, growth, belonging, safety, healing, and so many wonderful qualities that we wish upon every child, family, donor, and team member that comes into contact with Camp Willow.

Established in 2018, in Sydney's hometown of Norfolk, Nebraska, Camp Willow is an organization driven by progressive ideas, bold actions, and a strong foundation of support.
